THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE GOSPELS
I. The Holy Spirit is very important in the Gospel period.
A. John the Baptist was filled with the Spirit from his mother's
womb. Luke 1:15,80
B. By the Spirit, Simeon recognized baby Jesus was the Messiah. Luke 2:25
C. Jesus himself was conceived by the Holy Spirit. Matt 1:20
II. The Spirit in Jesus' ministry.
A. It empowered him for ministry at his baptism. Matt 3:16
(Jesus possessed the Spirit before this)
B. Jesus possessed the Spirit without any limits. John 3:34
C. The Spirit led Jesus. Mark 1:12-13
D. It gave him power for exorcisms. Matt 12:28
E. It inspired him for teaching. Luke 4:18
F. It gave him joy. Luke 10:21
III. Jesus and the giving of the Spirit.
A. Jesus alone baptizes people in the Spirit. John 1:33
B. This first occurred after the Resurrection. John 20:22
C. The Church as a whole received the Spirit at Pentecost. Acts 2
